Eligibility for skilled worker visa
Key Requirements for a Skilled Worker Visa:
- Valid Job Offer – a confirmed job offer from a UK employer with a valid Sponsor Licence. This sponsor certifies the employer’s legitimacy to hire migrant workers.
- Skill Level – The offered job must be listed on the government’s Skilled Occupations List or meet a minimum RQF Level 3 skill level.
- English Language Proficiency – you need to demonstrate English language proficiency at a minimum of B1 level on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) through an approved English language test.
- Maintenance Funds – you must show sufficient funds to maintain yourself and any dependents financially during your stay in the UK. The minimum amount varies depending on location and circumstances.
The new system works on a points system in which you need 70 points to be eligible; the mandatory requirements described above are listed a account for 50 total points. From there, you can qualify for having either of the below conditions to make up the necessary points.
- A salary of £23,040 to £25,599 or at least 90% of the going rate for the profession (whichever is higher) – 10 POINTS
- A Salary of £25,600 or above or at least the going rate for the profession (whichever is higher) – 20 POINTS
- Job in a shortage occupation as designated by the Migration Advisory Committee – 20 POINTS
- Applicant is a new entrant to the labour market (as designated by the MAC) – 20 POINTS
- Education qualification: PhD in a subject relevant to the job – 10 POINTS
- Education qualification: PhD in a STEM subject relevant to the job – 20 POINTS
The Application Process
- Secure a Sponsored Job Offer – find a job with a licensed sponsor that meets the skill level requirements.
- Gather Supporting Documents – Prepare documents like your passport, qualifications, English language test results, and proof of maintenance funds.
- Apply Online – Submit your online application through the UK government’s immigration portal. You may need to pay an application fee.
- Biometric Enrolment – Attend a visa appointment to provide fingerprints and a digital photograph.
- Decision and Visa Issuance – Upon successful application, you will receive your visa electronically or via courier.
